We have often dealt with the drawing of a FACE and its PROPORTIONS, working on the colors and shades of hair, eyes, and mouth. We can find this topic in previous lessons that we can find HERE. We can draw the detail of a face using a ready template on a WORKSHEET that you can find HERE or drawn from scratch by following the INSTRUCTIONS that you can find HERE.
After drawing the face in pencil, we focused on the BACKGROUND (NEGATIVE SPACE) and on its enhancement. 7th-grade students were asked to decorate the background of their drawings with free techniques and patterns. I encouraged their ingenuity by promising a “creativity bonus” for those who would invent the most imaginative background, and here below we are the result. We learned that taking care of the details of the negative space enhances the figure too: even the background matters!
