Here is the classic van of the 60s, drawn with oil pastels and decorated with the technique of sgraffito. In 6th grade classes we have experienced a new way to create a texture with oil pastels. After drawing freehand our van, we colored every part with oil pastels, making sure to use only light colors for the first layer of color. We then covered the fields of light colors with a second layer of darker colors. The last step was to scratch the surface of the color with a toothpick, in order to show the layer of underlying light color. The decorations are imaginative textures and give a real “Hippie look” at our van!
Here we have a variation created by the art teacher Carlo Narducci, with his grade 6th students. The School is the Middle School Ulivi of Poggio Moiano (Rieti). They have drawn another kind of car, an old Wolksvagen Beetle, with crayons (wax pastels)

Hi there,
What size of paper did you use?
Thanks for your help.
In our 6th grade art class we explored the spirit of the 1960s by drawing a classic van using oil pastels and the sgraffito technique. First we sketched our vans freehand, then filled every section with light pastel colors. After that we layered darker tones on top and carefully scratched patterns with a toothpick to reveal the bright layer underneath. The result was a vibrant hippie style van full of imaginative textures.
