Pattern Castles

| | , ,

We created these mixed media drawings to experiment with various techniques: creating black and white patterns with different tools and painting the background with shaded watercolors. For this work we invented castles, with many towers and separate areas that became a pretext to create many different types of patterns.

To draw our castles we were inspired by some examples that you can find on the 2 worksheets you see below. On the first sheet there are some examples of the central body of the castle, on the second sheet you will find different shapes of towers, doors and windows. Each student assembled the castle as they liked by composing different elements, to create a unique and personal building.

First of all we drew the castle with a pencil, assembling various elements. Then we traced the lines with a permanent marker. After that we decorated the various areas of the architecture with PATTERN, ZENTANGLE, TEXTURE, all strictly in black and white. For the design of these decorative motifs we used different tools such as PENS, PENCILS, MARKERS, CRAYONS… In this work the focus is on the variety, originality and differentiation of the patterns.

Once we had finished decorating the castle with different patterns and different tools, we painted the background with watercolor, with the “wet on wet” technique, which allows you to mix colors and create chromatic shades. To work more precisely on the sky we turned the paper over, and we turned it often to trace straight lines with the brush along the outer edges of the drawing.
